A more detailed recap of the 2024 election can be found here. Minnesota voted for the Harris/Walz ticket, carrying on a streak of 48 years of voting Democrat in the presidential election, but that wasn’t the case nationally. Donald Trump won both the popular vote and electoral college, and is set to capture most, if not all, the battle ground states needed to win the presidency. The Unites States Senate flipped to Republican control and we are awaiting final totals to determine who will have control of the United States House of Representatives.
Locally, we will see the DFL retain control of the Minnesota Senate with a 34-33 majority, as Ann Johnson Stewart was victorious in the lone Minnesota Senate election. The Minnesota House of Representatives saw three seats flip from Democrat to Republican, causing a 67-67 tie. There are two races that will go to a recount, which will determine if Republicans will take control of the Minnesota House of Representatives, or if the legislature will head into the 2025 legislative session with a very close Senate and a Minnesota House of Representatives grid-locked at 67-67. Tim Walz will return home to Minnesota to serve out his last two years as governor.
